Following a recent meeting with NICE’s Patient and Public Involvement Programme held in Manchester, CHIEF hopes to become more actively involved in the development of the Institute’s public health and clinical guidance, by registering as a stakeholder, using the patient versions of its guidelines and by encouraging black, Asian and minority ethnic community members to apply for lay positions on its various committees.
NICE – that is, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health. Its Patients and Public Involvement Programme already works with a variety of organisations across the country representing different community groups to help ensure that they are appropriately represented in any guidance and able to express their views.
NICE hopes that by working more closely with CHIEF, its guidance will further meet the needs and concerns of minority ethnic communities in the country and improve their health and wellbeing.
NICE guidance is:
- designed to promote good health and prevent ill health;
- produced by the people affected by our work, including health and social care professionals, patients and the public;
- based on the best evidence;
- transparent in its development, consistent, reliable and based on a rigorous processes;
- good value for money, weighing up the cost and benefits of treatments;
- internationally recognised for its excellence.
